1. Travel Insurance
It is advisable to have a valid travel insurance policy from your host country to cover emergency medical treatment or evacuation. Keep your policy number and insurance company contact details with you. Trekking without insurance is possible, but participants must submit a written statement to Outdoor Expedition stating their choice.
2. Climate Conditions
Seasons in Nepal depend on annual monsoons, typically from late June to early August, causing heavy rainfall and muddy trails. Late August through early November offers dry weather and pleasant temperatures. December to February is cold but offers clear mountain visibility. March to early June is warm, with vegetation in full bloom.
3. Fitness for Trekking
Nepal offers treks for all fitness levels. Consult Outdoor Expedition before your trek if concerned about physical preparedness. Itineraries allow time to acclimatize at higher elevations and rest adequately. A positive attitude and prior fitness preparation are highly recommended. A pre-trip checkup by your physician is advised.
4. Equipment and Clothing
Equipment varies by season, route, and accommodation type (tea-house or camping). Use a layered clothing approach: moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid-layer, and protective outer shell. Essentials include trekking boots, socks, head covering, sunblock, sunglasses, torchlight, water bottles, and personal care items. Outdoor Expedition provides a detailed equipment list upon booking, and equipment is available for sale or rent in Thamel. A pre-trek briefing is conducted in Kathmandu.
5. Vaccination
Nepal does not require vaccinations for entry. However, travelers may consider immunizations for Meningitis, Tetanus, Cholera, Diphtheria, Typhoid, and Gamma Globulin.
6. Travel Money
ATMs are available in Kathmandu and major cities. Currency exchanges exist at Tribhuvan Airport and in Kathmandu. Major hotels, shops, and restaurants accept credit cards. Carry sufficient cash for personal expenses and costs not included in your travel package.
7. Tourist Security
Nepal is generally safe, with low crime rates. Exercise caution with expensive items and secure belongings in hotels. Political demonstrations may occur, occasionally causing road or business closures. Tourist transport services usually remain unaffected to ensure travelers reach airports safely.
